23rd International Congress on Sericulture and Silk Industry

The 23rd International Congress on Sericulture and Silk Industry took place from 24th to 27th November at the hotel Leela Palace, Bengaluru. The ISC Congress, which is a triennial event, is the only international forum committed exclusively for the sericulture and silk sector that provides access to progress made in sericulture science and technology, current knowledge of the field, and the prevailing global business environment for silks.

313 participants from 17 different countries including 5 delegates from France are attending the 23rd International Congress on Sericulture & Silk Industry. The composition of participants is diverse and comprises of policy planners, representatives from international organizations, scientists, technocrats, resource persons, university faculty, university students, NGOs, entrepreneurs, industrialists, silk exporters & traders, fashion designers, silk machinery manufacturers, rearing accessories & chemicals manufacturers, and a cross-section of people from sericulture and silk industry.

During the valedictory ceremony Honourable Minister of Textile, Mr Santosh Kumar Gangwar, launched the e-commerce portal of www.silkmarkgocoop.com which gives information on the industry and allows users to purchase silk fabric and products online. Mr Eric Lavertu, Consul General of France, was invited as guest of honour for this ceremony.

On the same occasion, ISC showcased the unique artwork from spider silk and silk cocoon of French fashion designer and visual artist Isabelle Arciero-Mahier with Sandur Kushala Kala Kendra. She taught the 15 Lambani women how to work with different varieties of silk. They in turn are training about 40 other Lambani women.

The Congress was inaugurated by His Excellency, Shri Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala, the Governor of Karnataka. Dr. Sanjay Kumar Panda, I.A.S., Secretary to Govt. of India, Ministry of Textiles, was also present on this occasion. 3 eminent scientists selected by a panel of juries for the prestigious Louis Pasteur Prize for the year 2014 were also awarded during the event.
