Communiqué issued by the French Ministry of Defence
Monday 25 March 2013

The French forces in charge of protecting the airport of the Central African capital at M’Poko intervened this morning in a particularly confusing situation against three vehicles threatening to penetrate it, at a time when the forces had just been fired at from an unknown source. These vehicles were carrying Chadian and Indian nationals. Despite the warning shots fired by the guarding forces, the vehicles continued to proceed at high speed. Two Indian nationals died. The French forces immediately took care of the injured Indian and Chadians nationals, who were taken to a medical unit.

In these tragic circumstances, France, partner and friend of India, shares the grief of their families and conveys its heartfelt condolences to them and the Indian authorities. The President of the French Republic has sent a message of solidarity to the Prime Minister of India. The Minister of Defence, Mr Jean-Yves Le Drian, is due to speak to his Indian counterpart in the coming hours.

Deeply regretting this tragedy, the French Minister of Defence has ordered an enquiry to ascertain the exact circumstances. All light will be shed in liaison and full transparency with the Indian and Chadian authorities.
