The Ambassador of France to India, H.E. Mr François Richier, bestowed the honour of Knight of the National Order of Merit on Mr Rajiv Singhal, champagne and wine connoisseur. The award comes in recognition of Mr Singhal’s pioneering role in introducing various French wines to India – particularly champagnes - which are among the best illustrations of traditional French expertise and art of living.
Mr Rajiv Singhal graduated in Economics from Hindu College and went on to pursue post-graduate studies at the London School of Economics (Monetary Economics) and Yale University (International Macroeconomics). He is the founder and President of Ritu Overseas, a leading company in the import of luxury goods in India, established in 1993. From 2001 to 2008, he worked for Sopexa, in Paris, as a consultant and country director for the promotion of French wine and cheese in India. In 2006, he was appointed “Ambassador for Champagne” in India and Director of the India Champagne Bureau, which contributes to the promotion and protection of registered designation of origin Champagnes. In 2011, together with his wife Ritu, he launched a magazine dedicated to wine, “FINE Wine and Champagne”, the first of its kind in India, which is regarded as a reference among wine connoisseurs. Mr Singhal also contributed to initiating the “Sommelier” programme in various luxury hotels in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.
Ordre National du Mérite (French National Order of Merit) was instituted in 1963 by General Charles de Gaulle. It is awarded for distinguished services rendered in public, civil, military posts, or a private profession.
