Ladies and Gentlemen, Distinguished Guests,

It is indeed with great pleasure that I welcome the signature of the Memorandum of Understanding between TERI and CEA, today at the World Sustainable Development Summit.

As the Hon’ble President of India, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, stated yesterday — providing clean energy is one of the key challenges that the world will face in the near future, in pursuit of our goal of sustainable development of our planet.

Innovation will play a key role in the development of technological solutions for renewable energy. Our main challenge will be to develop efficient and affordable technological solutions, allowing us to reconciling enormous energy needs with the necessity of a cleaner development model.

In this context, collaborations between two major institutions like TERI and CEA, is of high importance. It will allow us to share at an international level best practice and knowledge.

CEA, France’s Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission, was recently ranked by Reuters as the world’s most innovative public research organization.

Throughout France, there are 16,000 technicians, engineers and researchers in 10 government-run centers working towards research, development and innovation, in the field of energy, health and security.

CEA’s LITEN Institute, which employs 1,400 people, conducts, technological research in new energy technologies, including storage of energy, hydrogen production and management, solar thermal and photovoltaic biomass.

This new collaboration will give TERI and CEA the opportunity, to develop a competent integration of renewable, more specifically, solar energy, with the key aspects of storage and integration in the grid.

Their project of development of electric mobility will also play a significant role in the low-carbon transition of India as the transport sector accounts for 13% of India’s energy related CO2 emissions.

I wish both the TERI and CEA success in their collaborations. I am sure that this relationship will further expand to other sectors, given the complementary nature of their respective activities and competence.
