Mr. Alain Juppé, former Prime Minister of France and former Foreign Minister of France, and currently, Mayor of Bordeaux visited India on 23rd January 2007 to attend the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit organised by TERI.
During his visit, Mr. Juppé, in his capacity as the President of the Committee of Honour, presented the forthcoming Paris conference for Global Ecological Governance –“Citizens for Earth”-, held in Paris on 2nd-3 rd February 2007. to high level government authorities.
An initiative of President Chirac, the Paris conference for Global Ecological Governance 2007 brings together ministers, scientists, company heads, NGOs and public figures from over sixty countries in a spirit of good world ecological citizenship. The goal of the Conference is to mobilise international efforts to achieve three objectives-
to raise awareness of the urgency of the world environmental situation
to decide upon priority measures to combat these threats
to take action at international level, to create a United Nations Environment Organisation (UNEO) with a view to strengthen environmental governance.
Six thematic workshops were conducted during the conference, covering climate disruption, safeguarding biodiversity, combating pollution & protecting health, making water a collective issue, changing mentalities and patterns of production and consumption and strenthening international environmental governance.
