Visit to Kolkata of the mathematician Cédric Villani

Professor Cédric Villani visited Kolkata from 26 to 31 August 2016.

During his stay, Prof. Villani gave three lectures on mathematics, before hundreds of students, at the Indian Statistical Institute of Kolkata and at Presidency University.


He visited the Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IISER) of Kolkata where he had exchanges with the professors and students. He also visited the city of Chandernagore.


Prof. Villani discussed with the Consul General of France Damien Syed the Indo-French cooperation in the field of sciences, especially in Eastern India.

Prof. Villani is a renowned mathematician who received in 2010 the Fields Medal (the equivalent of a Nobel Prize for mathematics). At present, he is the Director of the Institut Henri Poincaré in Paris and also Professor at the Université de Lyon. He has made significant contributions to diverse areas of mathematics and mathematical physics.
