Thierry Berthelot joined the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs in 1993 by clearing the “concours d’Orient”, after a first professional experience of five years. He held various positions, both in France and abroad before his appointment in Bangalore:

Head of the political section and First Counselor at the French Embassy in China (Beijing), until August 2021. He spent three years at the Ministry of Defense (2014-2017), at the department of strategy, as advisor for Asia (Paris). He served as Political Counselor at the French Embassy in China (2011-2014). Thierry Berthelot was Deputy Head of Mission at the French Embassy in Korea (2008-2011), after serving as First Secretary (2007). He served as Deputy Director for the Far East at the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs (2005-2007), after serving as one of the Deputy to the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Press and Communication Section).
He followed a ten-month training course during at IGPDE, Institute of the Ministry of the Economy and Finance (2003-2004).
He was First Secretary at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva (1999-2003). He was Second Secretary at the French Embassy in China (1995-1999). Upon joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1993, Thierry Berthelot served two years in the Asia and Oceania directorate, as desk officer overseeing China and Mongolia issues.

Thierry was born in 1961. He grew up in mainland France and overseas.
He holds a Master’s and a Bachelor’s degree in Asian and Chinese studies from the National Institute of Oriental Studies (Paris), and a graduate school degree (DESS) from the University of Paris 2 (law and defense). Thierry is fluent in English and Chinese and has some knowledge of German.

Since September 20, 2021, Thierry Berthelot is Consul General of France in Bangalore (the jurisdiction covers the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana).
