World Environment Day 2016 : “Green Puja Award” and discussion on COP21
The Consul General of France in Calcutta, Mr. Damien Syed, took part in “Serader Sera Nirmal Puja Puroshkar”, the Green Puja Award, on June 5, 2016 at Paramhansa vessel on the Hooghly river on the occasion of World Environment day 2016.
The award aims to change the paradigm of Puja to a reasonable extent in Kolkata by highly popularizing the lead-free idols and environment friendly puja practices. It was organized by nonprofit Environment Governed Integrated Organisation (EnGIO) with the support of Government of West Bengal, Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Kolkata Port Trust and other academic institutions and civil society organisations.
The event, which has become an eco friendly movement, was initiated by some key environmentalists and related academicians of state who remain involved in the programme.
Hosted by Mr. Jayanta Basu, Environment expert, Director of EnGIO and Journalist, the award ceremony was also attended by the Hon’ble Minister in Charge, Disaster Management, Government of West Bengal Mr. Javed Ahmed Khan, the Hon’ble Kolkata Municipal Corporation Mayor in Council Mr Debasish Kumar, alternate energy expert Mr. Sujay Basu, noise expert Mrs. Gitanath Ganguly and West Bengal Pollution Control Board Chairman Mr. Kalyan Rudra.
The award ceremony held on a Ganges cruise was followed by very topical interaction and discussion on climate issues related to the COP21 held in Paris last year.
The French Consul General presented the priorities of the French COP21 Presidency and underlined the need of global efforts to implement the Paris agreement in order to fight climate disruption.
